Seventeen years ago, my husband and I embarked on a journey to a honeymoon destination we knew nothing about. The entire trip was planned based on referrals—slightly risky, but we were up for the adventure into the unknown! Fortunately for us, we fell in love with the British Virgin Islands, and we now return every other year to explore new adventures the Caribbean Islands offer. But mostly, for me, I look forward to venturing away from our Central Illinois wedding venue into warmer climates where I can put my toes in the sand!
What some people may not realize is that you don't have to go far from home, or even out of the country, to find your ideal destination! There are amazing places to travel within the U.S. that don't require a passport. Not every couple wants to navigate the frustrations you may run into when traveling internationally. So whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or a mix of both, this guide will inspire you with unforgettable honeymoon destinations that don’t require a passport!
Honeymoon Getaway in Maui, Hawaii
Hawaii is a dream honeymoon getaway, and if you’re a U.S. citizen, you can visit without a passport. Maui features lush landscapes, from its emerald valleys to cascading waterfalls.
Hawaii is on my bucket list, and while I have never been there, I can imagine spending my day on the famous Road to Hana, where I would witness breathtaking views. Or how about making unique stops at the Akaka Falls and black sand beaches while sampling fresh fruit from local roadside stands? After a day of exploration, Brett and I would unwind with an oceanside dinner at a resort, enjoying freshly caught fish. There's really nothing better than fresh catch!
If adventure is your vibe, snorkeling at Molokini Crater is a must. This underwater paradise boasts vibrant marine life and crystal-clear water, with visibility often exceeding 100 feet. The warm Aloha spirit enhances your experience, making it feel truly special!

We love the Caribbean! In fact, we love it so much that we have incorporated many Caribbean features into our Central IL wedding venue! We've brought the Caribbean blue waters to our sparkling pond, along with a bright sandy beach. On a sunny day at our pond, you may actually feel like you're in the Caribbean of Central IL!
So, if you’re dreaming of a Caribbean getaway that doesn’t require a passport, Puerto Rico is a fantastic option. With crystal-clear beaches, rich history, and vibrant culture, there's much to explore. Stroll through the colorful streets of Old San Juan, adorned with colonial architecture and cobblestone pathways. Snap stunning photos in front of landmark structures like El Morro fortress.
Don’t miss out on the bioluminescent bays where microscopic organisms illuminate the water at night. Paddling through these glowing waters feels like a magical experience. For beach lovers, Vieques offers stunning white-sand shores that are perfect for sunbathing and swimming. And of course, you can't forget my favorite part: the food! A seaside dinner featuring local seafood will be sure to please the palate.
Honeymoon Getaway in the Mountains of Aspen, Colorado
For couples who prefer cool climates and breathtaking mountain views, Aspen, Colorado, is an excellent honeymoon getaway. Known for its winter skiing, Aspen also offers lush summer landscapes. Take advantage of numerous hiking trails, where you can enjoy the fresh mountain air and gorgeous scenery. The Maroon Bells trail is famous for its striking views, especially during wildflower season.

Having a dire love for food, I would err on the side of shrimp and grits, but I will warn you, if you are sensitive to spice, beware, as the Southern-style shrimp and grits are commonly spicy. For a memorable evening, consider a riverboat cruise on the Savannah River, where you can enjoy the sunset while soaking in stunning views of the city's lights reflecting on the water.
A final addition you need to add to your itinerary is a trip to see the Savannah Bananas. If you've never heard of them, they are the most entertaining Banana Ball team of all time! Think Harlem Globetrotters but as a live baseball team! With over a million followers on TikTok and rising popularity, you will want to book your visit well in advance, as their events always bring a sold-out crowd.
Wine Lovers' Honeymoon Getaway in Napa Valley, California
Our excursion to Italy in 2018 left my husband and me with a big appreciation for quality wine! If you both love fine wines and beautiful vineyard landscapes, and don't want to escape halfway around the world to Italy, Napa Valley should be at the top of your list. This iconic getaway invites couples to indulge without the hassle of international travel.
Visit some of the area's most prestigious wineries for tastings that showcase excellent California wines. You'll not only sample exquisite vintages but also gain insight into the winemaking process. Monticello Napa Valley Winery is a top-rated, family-owned business. They offer tours and wine tastings. Guests have commented on how knowledgeable and friendly the staff is and how flavorful the red wines are!
Enjoy unique culinary experiences with a picnic under olive trees or book a dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Honeymoon Getaway Await in the Florida Keys
Oh, the Florida Keys! We often rent a convertible and drive the interstate from Miami all the way down to Key West, stopping at all the hole-in-the-wall attractions on the way down. The drive is a breath of fresh air as you take in your surroundings of turquoise water and white sand beaches. For adventurous couples, the Florida Keys is the perfect honeymoon getaway.
Visit Key West’s charming streets, stop by the historic Hemingway House, and enjoy a sunset sail on a catamaran. I will say that Key West is not known for its beaches; in fact, they don't have many on the island! If you're looking for a beach, I would recommend staying at Casa Marina, as the hotel has its own private beach. You can also request a private romantic dinner on their beach! Not something you'd find in the city limits of Champaign, IL! What Key West is known for is its nightlife! If you find yourself on Duval Street during the spring, prepare yourself for most bars and restaurants to have a line at the entrance. If a crowd doesn't bother you, check out Irish Kevin's for the live music or Hog's Breath Saloon for their tasty BBQ! I will warn you to beware of Bushman - the man who camouflages himself as a bush and jumps out and scares people! It's quite comical - until it happens to you!
If you enjoy water activities, try snorkeling or diving in coral reefs where colorful marine life abounds. I would highly recommend renting a tiki boat from Tiki Boat Adventures Key West and embarking on a sandbar and sunset cruise. After thrilling days filled with adventure, unwind under the stars, enjoying the laid-back ambiance perfect for cuddling and letting the day’s excitement wash over you. The Florida Keys promise an unforgettable honeymoon experience that will keep you coming back for more.
