Explore a park to find your perfect engagement photo op!

Here in Central IL, from Champaign to Bloomington-Normal, we have some pretty impressive parks for engagement photo ops! The natural beauty of our area really stands out as an amazing backdrop! We might not have the Caribbean blue waters as our background, but when the sun sets behind the tall rows of golden corn, throwing out those hues of pink and orange, it can be just as breathtaking!

Let's look at some of the park options we have in our region that would be the perfect setting for your Central IL engagement pictures!

Allerton Park and Retreat Center

Allerton Park has a rich, deep history - going all the way back to its founder, Robert Allerton. He was a very wealthy man who loved art and the outdoors. So he purchased this property, which he referred to as "The Farms," for his private estate. In 1946, he donated the property to the University of Illinois, and they turned it into a public park to show off all of Robert's collections of art and the surrounding gardens.

While strolling through the park, you will find many locations for photo ops. In the spring, I enjoy walking through the peony garden when it's in full bloom. And not far from the flower gardens, you will find the sunken gardens in all their rustic charm. This is one of the prime locations for weddings at this venue. Aside from the peony garden and the sunken garden, I love the beauty of the grass field near the mansion. It's simply a field of grass - but there is something about the beauty of its rolling hills and blue sky that looks stunning for an engagement location. Maybe I'm partial to this prime location because my husband and I chose to do our engagement session in this exact field!

No matter where you end up in this park, you will find beauty at each turn! So go explore Allerton Park and find the perfect backdrop that fits your vibe for your engagement pictures.

Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve

Mahomet, Illinois, is a community near Champaign, IL, that is growing at a rapid rate. Outside of town, you will find the beautiful Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve. This is one of the main attractions in our area, as the park is huge and has so much to offer! I enjoy walking the trails around the lake - there are so many different ones with different scenery. Sometimes you'll happen upon a picnic spot, a rustic wooden bridge, or you'll witness a beautiful reflection off the lake. Perhaps the best find of all might be the botanical gardens! All of these would be prime locations for your wedding engagement pictures.

So go check out Lake of the Woods and don't be afraid to "get lost" on their trails. You never know what you may come upon in that spontaneous moment!

The Arboretum

The University of Illinois campus provides many places for amazing backdrops. On our wedding day, our photographer took us to this place on campus called The Arboretum. This place is filled with stunning scenery as there are over 100 acres of gardens and natural spaces!

Within the Arboretum, the university has different sections that are sponsored by different people or groups. Some favorite places include their annual and perennial flower gardens. The Noel Welcome Garden is my favorite. I love the smell of the hydrangeas that surround the trellis. This place is in partial shade, making it perfect for taking pictures no matter what time of day.

In the hosta garden, provided by the Illinois Prairie Hosta Society, you will find a garden containing a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures to create your perfect photo. This garden has more than 100 different hosta varieties growing among shade trees, giving you the perfect location for your engagement backdrop.

If you want to add a bit of culture to your memories, check out The Japan House Tea Garden. Here you will find a different backdrop that's more focused on tree canopies, shrubs, and moss-covered floors decorated with stepping stones and lanterns. The hues of greenery will pop with any bright colors or neutrals of clothing that you choose.

Funks Grove

Let's move out of the Champaign, IL area, closer to my old stomping grounds, and explore Funks Grove in McLean, Illinois! This wonderful, thriving area along Historic Route 66 is widely known for its maple syrup (it's seriously to die for)!

Funks Grove has a lot to offer for anyone seeking a perfect location for engagement photos. The grounds are open most of the day, with some areas accessible by appointment only. As you explore the grounds, you will come across a quaint chapel (I've attended several weddings here), a rustic barn, and a stately farmhouse built in 1864 by the Funk family. I would highly recommend making a reservation for the tour to find the location that best suits you as a couple. Plus, you may learn something new along the way!

Perhaps the most intriguing area is The Chapel of the Templed Trees. This sanctuary, located in the heart of the timber, is a quiet yet beautiful location to immerse yourself in an intimate engagement photoshoot.

Constitution Trail

Just a bit north of Funks Grove, we travel to the city of Bloomington-Normal, IL, for our final highly recommended engagement picture location. The Constitution Trail is an interesting 45-mile path, spanning between Bloomington and Normal, Illinois.

Before going, I would recommend you download the trail map to find your perfect location and also the best place to park, as there are parking lots along the trail. Perhaps the highlight of this trail is that the majority of it is paved, which makes it easily accessible. And to add to that, this trail caters to those who love nature (and wooden bridges), but also those who love the city scenery, as the trail makes its way through uptown Normal, IL.
