We Asked Over 100 Wedding Venue Owners and Got a Clear Answer To What Most Couples Choose for their Wedding Reception Table Setup

One of the first layout decisions couples face when planning their wedding reception is something that might sound simple on the surface. Where do we sit?

But anyone who has been through the planning process knows it is not simple at all. Your table setup shapes how you move through the night, how connected you feel to your guests, and honestly, how much you actually enjoy your own reception.

So we decided to go straight to the people who see it all play out in real time. We polled the Wedding Venue Owners and Management Community on Facebook with a straightforward question: Which couples' table setup is most commonly chosen at your venue?

More than 116 votes came in from venue owners running barns, ballrooms, waterfront spaces, farm estates, and historic inns from coast to coast. Here is what they said.

The Poll Results

We offered five options. The results were not even close.

The sweetheart table took nearly 67% of the vote. Traditional head tables came in a distant second. Everything else trailed far behind. Venue owners across the country said the same thing in a dozen different ways: couples want to be together, want to be seen, and want their wedding party to have a good time too.

Why Couples Keep Choosing the Sweetheart Table

All eyes on this stunning couple as they enjoy their wedding reception at the table together.

The appeal is not hard to understand. A sweetheart table puts the couple at the center of the room with a clear view of their guests, their dance floor, and every moment as it unfolds. There is no one to lean around, no seating chart drama for the wedding party, and no awkward conversation logistics.

Angela Ellison of The Barn at Black Canyon in Emmett, Idaho, put it plainly:

"Sweetheart table by far. Our couples seem to like having all eyes on them."

Sandy McDavid of Palafox Wharf, a romantic waterfront venue, noticed the same preference playing out over and over:

"Almost every wedding at Palafox Wharf Waterfront is with a sweetheart table. We have a small rectangular and a small round to choose from. Rectangular is most popular."

At Sawyers Cove Farm in central Alabama, owner Ginny Rawls Dudley described it as a design choice as much as a seating one:

"As the heart of the reception, a sweetheart table creates an intimate focal point that highlights the couple's meaningful design choices."

And Constance Tarbox of Battlefield Bed and Breakfast Inn in Gettysburg, PA, pointed out a practical benefit a lot of couples do not think about until after the fact:

"We almost always have sweetheart tables to make it easier for wedding party members to sit with their dates!"

The Sweetheart Table Has Changed a Lot

Venue owners also brought up something interesting. The sweetheart table is still winning, but it looks different than it used to. The tiny two person table tucked in a corner? Most couples are moving past that and going BIG!

Katie Michelle Marxer of The Veil Wedding Loft, a historic venue in Redlands, California, said her couples are going bigger:

"Almost always, it's a sweetheart table here in Southern California. And typically the couples upgrade from the smaller half round to a farmhouse table to accommodate more room for decor! Having a farmhouse table allows for taller couples to be more comfortable and also allows for beautiful tablescapes and decor on the ground as well."

Lynette McCarthy of The Ballroom at Windsor in Middletown, Delaware, shared what makes their setup so special for couples:

"Our couples love our custom wood sweetheart table, handcrafted right here on the farm. It gives them the perfect view of the grand fireplace, their guests, and a chance to enjoy dinner together, catch their breath, and soak in the moment, all while remaining part of the celebration."

The Setup Most Venues Are Seeing Right Now

Here is the trend that came up again and again in the comments. Couples are not choosing between a sweetheart table and including their wedding party anymore. They are doing both.

Willow Sky Ranch described the most requested setup at their venue:

"Most common is sweetheart table with bridal party in first row seated kings style on two 8 foot tables. Second most popular is just sweetheart table and bridal party mixed in with guest tables with their families. We have not had a huge head table display in 2 years."

LeAnna Morgan Key of Oakhurst Farm Weddings and Events in West Point, Georgia sees a similar flexibility at her venue:

"95% of our couples choose a sweetheart table to spotlight them only up front, and some will either reserve guest tables for bridal party and immediate family, or allow them to sit scattered among the guests and only reserve front tables for immediate family so they are close to the action to watch the important formalities of First Dance, Parent Dances, Cake Cuttings, and Toasts."

Colleen Sutton of Richwood on the River, LLC summed it up well:

"We have been seeing a sweetheart table with wedding party tables on either side. It's the best of both worlds."

The Case for the King's Table

This elegant kings table setup creates a vibe of togetherness and support for the newly married couple, as they celebrate at their Central IL wedding reception.

The king's table did not get many votes in the poll, but the venue owners who love it make a good argument. Randy Schmitz of Rolling Ridge Wedding and Event Center explained his thinking:

"Harvest table, kings table, because it accommodates uneven wedding parties, plus ones, and encourages connection instead of display."

For couples with a large or lopsided wedding party, or those who just want everyone physically together at one long table, the king's table creates a different kind of energy. It feels more celebratory, more communal. Less of a stage and more of a feast.

Sweetheart Table, Everywhere You Look

We heard from venues in nearly every region of the country and the answer was remarkably consistent.

Glenna Smith Rasche of Smith's Acre Venue kept her answer short and honest:

"Sweetheart table only."

Allison Snow Rhinehardt of The Rafters at Historic St. Mark's in Charlotte, NC said the same thing.

Leslie Reardon of The Views at Sunset Ridge added: "

Most all of our couples choose our sweetheart table but are still close to the bridal party and family on all sides."

Kristin Warren of Wine Loft Birmingham, one of Birmingham's premier event venues, was excited to weigh in as well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wedding Couples Table Setups

  1. What is a sweetheart table at a wedding?

A sweetheart table is a small table set apart from the main guest tables where only the couple sits during the reception. It gives the bride and groom a private, intimate space while still being the focal point of the room.

  1. What is a king's table at a wedding?

A king's table is a long harvest-style table where the couple and their entire wedding party all sit together facing the guests. The wedding party sits on both sides of the table, facing each other, which creates a communal, festive atmosphere.

  1. Should the couple sit at a sweetheart table or a head table?

Based on our poll of over 100 venue owners, most couples choose a sweetheart table. The main reasons are privacy, flexibility for wedding party members to sit with their dates and families, and the visual impact of being the clear focal point in the room.

  1. How do you seat the wedding party if the couple uses a sweetheart table?

Most commonly, the wedding party is seated at a kings-style table directly behind or beside the couple, or they are distributed among the guest tables with their own dates and family members. Both options work well and the latter has become increasingly popular.

  1. What is the most popular wedding table setup?
